Some questions may seem unrelated to your current medical condition, but remember that our treatment philosophy is designed to treat you as a whole person – body, mind and spirit. Your treatment session may include acupuncture and other TCM modalities such as cupping, acupressure/tuina, guasha, etc. Your acupuncture care team may also recommend an herbal prescription and/or lifestyle recommendation for diet and exercise.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin, solid needles which are then activated through gentle specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation.

Acupuncture is part of the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This traditional medicine modality is a highly effective, affordable, low risk treatment option for a multitude of health issues and chronic conditions. It is one of the most requested complementary and alternative medicine choices in the U.S. today. To learn more about acupuncture, check out Acupuncture: In Depth from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is based on an ancient and empirical system of medicine founded on the concept of Qi (pronounced “chee”), meaning energy/life force, and its flow through the body along channels or meridians. Acupuncture works by balancing the body’s Qi, which can be described as a form of bioenergy that runs through the body. Disruption of this energy flow results in illness and disease. By applying acupuncture to certain points, Qi flow is improved and energetic balance restored, thereby improving health.

From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture appears to work by stimulating parts of the brain, as well as by triggering the release natural neurochemicals in the body that will bring about desired physiological changes. While the exact biomechanisms are unknown, the clinical effects are measurable.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is widely acknowledged as one of the safest forms of medicine. Acupuncture needles are sterile, disposable and used only once. Acupuncturists undergo extensive training and are regulated by state acupuncture boards. In California, all acupuncturists are licensed and regulated by the California Acupuncture Board.

What does acupuncture feel like?

Acupuncture is done using hair-thin needles. Most people barely feel needles when inserted, some may feel a slight pinch as the needle is inserted. The needle is inserted to a point that produces a sensation of pressure or ache. Needles may be heated during the treatment or mild electric current may be applied to them. Some people report acupuncture makes them feel energized. Others say they feel relaxed.

There are certain sensations associated with the therapeutic effects of acupuncture. These may include slight cramping, heaviness, distention, tingling or electric sensation traveling along a meridian. If any discomfort is experienced, it is usually mild and temporary.

How often do I need to come in for treatment?

It depends on the condition that is being treated and how the patient respond to the acupuncture treatment. Some patients / conditions respond well with a few treatments, while others need long-term acupuncture care. Occasionally, you may see some results in as little as 2-4 visits; typically, it will take up to 8-12 visits for definite changes to set in.

Please arrive 20 minutes prior to your appointment or complete your paperwork online
before arrival.
• Insurance: Please ask the front desk staff for a superbill if you require one for insurance
reimbursement.
• Cancellations: May be completed online via Jane. Late cancellations incur a $20 fee.

Conditions Treated at our Integrative Medicine and Longevity Specialty Clinic

1. Skin Conditions

Skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis are common concerns. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treats these conditions by addressing the root causes, often related to internal imbalances. Treatments include acupuncture to regulate the immune system and reduce inflammation, herbal remedies tailored to detoxify the body and clear heat, and dietary recommendations to support skin health. Gua Sha and cupping therapy may also be used to improve circulation and promote healing.

2. Joint, Knee, Hip, Lower Back, and Neck Pain

Pain in these areas is often due to musculoskeletal issues, inflammation, or degenerative conditions. TCM approaches include acupuncture to alleviate pain and stimulate healing, moxibustion to warm the affected areas and promote circulation, and tuina massage to relieve muscle tension and improve mobility. Herbal formulas such as Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang may be prescribed to nourish the joints and alleviate discomfort. Integrative therapies like physical therapy and Tai Chi may also be recommended for long-term pain management and strengthening.

3. Rheumatism

Rheumatism, characterized by inflammation and pain in the joints and muscles, is treated through acupuncture to reduce inflammation and improve circulation. Herbal medicine, such as Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan, is used to eliminate dampness and cold, which are believed to contribute to rheumatic symptoms. TCM also emphasizes lifestyle modifications, including stress management and diet changes, to reduce flare-ups.

4. Arthritis

Arthritis treatment in TCM focuses on alleviating pain, reducing inflammation, and slowing the progression of joint damage. Acupuncture is commonly used to manage pain and improve joint function. Herbal treatments, including formulations like Xiao Huo Luo Dan, target the underlying causes such as cold, dampness, and wind. Integrative approaches may also involve physical therapy, exercises like Tai Chi, and nutritional advice to support joint health.

5. Diabetes

In managing diabetes, TCM focuses on regulating blood sugar levels and addressing the underlying imbalances. Acupuncture may be used to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce stress. Herbal formulas such as Yu Quan Wan can support the pancreas and improve glucose metabolism. Additionally, dietary therapy based on TCM principles is recommended to stabilize blood sugar levels. Integrative strategies may include lifestyle counseling and monitoring by a Western medical practitioner.

6. Obesity

Obesity is treated in TCM by addressing the root causes such as spleen deficiency and stagnation of qi. Acupuncture is used to control appetite, improve digestion, and boost metabolism. Herbal treatments, such as Bao He Wan, help in reducing excess body weight by improving digestion and eliminating food stagnation. A comprehensive treatment plan often includes dietary guidance, exercise recommendations, and lifestyle changes to support long-term weight management.

7. Insomnia and Chronic Fatigue

For insomnia and chronic fatigue, TCM focuses on balancing the yin and yang energies, calming the mind, and nourishing the body. Acupuncture is used to regulate sleep patterns and boost energy levels, often targeting points related to the heart, liver, and kidneys. Herbal formulas like Suan Zao Ren Tang may be prescribed to calm the spirit and promote restful sleep. Qi Gong and meditation are often recommended as adjunct therapies to enhance relaxation and energy restoration.

8. Cardiac and Lung Conditions

Cardiac conditions like hypertension and heart disease, as well as lung conditions such as asthma and chronic bronchitis, are treated through TCM by improving circulation, strengthening the organs, and reducing stress. Acupuncture can regulate heart function and improve respiratory efficiency. Herbal formulas, such as Shen Qi Wan, may be prescribed to support cardiovascular health and lung function. Lifestyle changes, including stress management and dietary modifications, are integral to the treatment plan.

9. Circulatory Conditions

Circulatory issues, including poor blood circulation, varicose veins, and Raynaud's phenomenon, are addressed in TCM by promoting the free flow of qi and blood. Acupuncture is used to enhance circulation and alleviate symptoms like pain and numbness. Herbal treatments like Dan Shen Yin may be recommended to invigorate blood flow and resolve blood stasis. Patients may also be advised on exercises and dietary habits that support healthy circulation.

10. Constipation

Constipation is treated in TCM by regulating the digestive system, moistening the intestines, and promoting bowel movements. Acupuncture can help stimulate peristalsis and relieve abdominal discomfort. Herbal formulas like Ma Zi Ren Wan are often used to lubricate the intestines and move stool. Dietary therapy is also crucial, with recommendations for foods that promote regularity and hydration.

11. Incontinence

Incontinence, whether urinary or fecal, is addressed in TCM by strengthening the kidney and spleen functions, which are responsible for controlling bodily fluids. Acupuncture targets points that tonify the kidneys and bladder. Herbal formulas such as Sang Piao Xiao San may be prescribed to strengthen urinary control. Pelvic floor exercises and lifestyle modifications are often recommended to improve muscle tone and control.

12. Prostate Dysfunction

Prostate issues, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostatitis, are treated in TCM by improving qi circulation and reducing inflammation. Acupuncture is commonly used to alleviate symptoms like urinary retention and pain. Herbal remedies such as Qian Lie Shu Tong Pian are used to support prostate health and relieve symptoms.
